Well, I finally made the leap towards owning my own homestead. We moved from the quarter acre lot that we had raised our kids on and moved out to 7 acres! It’s all about perspective. I know 7 acres isn’t quite the same as living out in the big, wide open country, but it is MY little bit of country – and I love it! Urban homesteading is possible with less land, so I know I can make it work on our lovely plot of earth.
Let me tell you, it is hard stepping into another way of life. Who knew there was so much to learn just to get grass to grow in the pasture! Currently, we are under a lot of mud… I know every inch of this land because I had to walk back and forth across the entire thing with a push spreader to seed it. I put down 18 bags of seed, about 100 pounds of seed per acre. And our 7 acres seemed more like a never-ending 700! Now, any farmer would tell you that is not the way to do it. “By golly, get on your mower or your tractor or your ATV or side by side, and drag a seeder around behind you!” Well….yes, I guess we need to do a little shopping 🙂 Trying to be a farmer, without the proper equipment is just making things tougher than they need to be.
We are headed out today to look at a used BX2660 Kubota tractor!
